But due to the nature of the WD Red drives, I know they are meant for 24/7 uptime. It is not something that will be accessed constantly. As I've mentioned, the NAS will be used at most once or twice per day. I do understand the problem relating to spinning up/down drives. I am also limited in the space I have available for drives in the case. Also, in my case with 4 8TB drives, having 2 8TB drives in mirror and then adding another pair in mirrors would knock out another 8TB of storage from the pool versus having all four drives in RAIDZ1. This is a limitation I am currently facing with my RAIDZ1 setup.

So if I am getting close to running out of space, I could just pop in another 8TB drive and that solves my problem. What I meant with my post was that I needed the ability to add disks without having to swap them all out for larger drives.

Any help with this is immensely appreciated. These WD 8TB Reds make a very annoying sound every 5 seconds (normal) and having 4 of them next to me is pretty much not tolerable.
